Gateway Arch National Park
Getting there
If you are flying to visit Gateway Arch, the best option is the St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). It is 15 miles / 20 minutes from the arch. All major airlines fly in and out of STL.
If you are coming from Indianapolis International Airport (IND), it is 243 miles / 3.5 hours from the arch.
If you are coming from Louisville International Airport (SDF), it is 270 miles / 4 hours from the arch.
An afternoon at Gateway Arch
While passing through St. Louis on a work trip, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to see Gateway Arch. A week or so before leaving, I visited the Gateway Arch website to purchase a tram ticket. Starting at $15, you have the option to book a tram ride to the top, book a riverfront cruise, or book a combo ticket. There are also options for a documentary movie, virtual reality theater, and combo tickets for all the activities.
Being limited on time, I only booked the tram ride to the top. The tickets are sold in 5-10 minute increments and will sell out! Book before your trip to guarantee your spot.
When I arrived at the arch, I walked around the park and then went inside to tour the museum. After the museum, you’ll see restrooms, a small cafeteria, and gift shop.
When your timed ticket is called, you’ll be put into groups. I was solo, so I was paired with another solo traveler. You’ll be given a number and you stay on that number as you walk through. I wasn’t sure what to expect of the tram, but was surprised by what it looked like! The best way to describe it is climbing into a little egg pod. It was a tight squeeze! If you’re over 5’6″, you’ll be hunched over.
The top was similar – I wasn’t sure what to expect and was surprised! It’s a narrow musty room with teeny tiny windows to peek out. The view was great, though! In total, you’re 630 feet up!
After my ride, I was off to the airport. If you have more time when you’re visiting Gateway Arch, check out the St. Louis Zoo (it’s FREE!) and Pappy’s bbq.
